Kozhikode:
Pro-Left DYFI (Democratic Youth Federation of India) activists attacked the office of leading vernacular daily 'Malayala Manorama' as their protest march to IG office turned violent after it was blocked by police in Kozhikode today (July 28, 2004).
According to police, the miscreants pelted stones at the newspaper's office, located adjacent to the Nadakkavu Police Station where the march was blocked.
The glass panes of the front portion of the news daily was totally damaged in the attack, the sources said, adding the protestors were later chased away by the police from the scene.
CPM (Communist Party of India-Marxist) State Secretary Pinarayi Vijayan was addressing the protestors when the attack took place, the sources added.
DYFI took out the march to protest against the Police 'highhandedness' against student and youth organisations who agitated in Kozhikode on Saturday (July 24, 2004) against the arrest 11 of its volunteers condemning the circumstances leading to the death of an engineering student in Thiruvananthapuram last week.
Prohibitory orders under Sec.21/23 Kerala Police Act had been clamped in the area since last night (July 27, 2004).
