Govt should 'communicate' with Opposition: NDA Wednesday, July 28 2004 20:15 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
Indicating that the NDA (National Democratic Alliance) was ready to end boycott of Parliamentary Committees, BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) today (July 28, 2004) said the Government should "communicate" with the Opposition to create a "conducive atmosphere".
"Our boycott is because of confrontationist attitude of the Government. If the Government is willing to change its attitude, we will also end our boycott," BJP's additional spokesperson Manvendra Singh told in New Delhi.
Emphasising that the NDA did not want to disrupt the functioning of Parliament, he said the Government needed to create a "conducive atmosphere" and establish contact with NDA leadership to end the deadlock.
"If the Government wants us to end our boycott of Parliamentary Standing Committee and Consultative Committee, it should communicate to us," the BJP MP said.
He pointed out that onus of ensuring smooth functioning of Parliament lied on Government, particularly the Parliamentary Affairs Minister, and not the Speaker who has asked the Opposition to call off their boycott.
Singh evaded a reply when asked what the NDA expected the Government to do so that the Opposition would end its protest.
He, however, underlined that to ensure smooth functioning of the Parliament, the Opposition should be given appropriate opportunity to voice its issues in the House which is its "right".
The NDA Government never choked the voice of Opposition, he said, adding former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee used to consult Opposition for "valuable governance".
