Show of strength by PWG; will not give up arms Wednesday, July 28 2004 22:04 Hrs (IST)
Warangal:
In a massive show of strength, Peoples War Group (PWG) today (July 28, 2004) organised its first public meeting after the ban was lifted in Andhra Pradesh and set the tone for the ensuing talks with the State Government, dropping enough hints that they would not give up arms.
Celebrating their 'freedom in the true spirit of the movement', rich tributes were paid to martyrs at Mogalicherla village near Warangal by unveiling the 'Martyrs' Memorial'.
State Civil Liberties President, Kalyan Rao said PWG would carry `peoples' aspirations' to the state during the talks and asserted that PWG has only dropped their arms temporarily to enable the peace talks to progress.
Braving inclement weather, thousands of sympathisers and PWG cadre gathered at Mogalicherla, the native place of PWG secretary Ramakrishna who carries the highest reward on his head.
While Gadar stole the limelight with his lucid songs and inimitable dances highlighted the struggle and repression that the cadre had undergone, revolutionary writer Varavara Rao alleged that police were still harassing common people keen to come for the meeting, despite assurance from the State Government.
Former Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu's policies, 'favouring' MNCs, were also attacked by the ultras at the function. Naidu, who had re-imposed ban on PWG and six frontal units in 1995, had survived a PWG landmine blast in Tirupati last year.
