Mumbai: Police has ruled out possibility of anything untoward in the death of former Miss India, Nafisa Joseph, with autopsy reports confirming that the model-turned-VJ ended life by hanging self last night (July 29, 2004).

"Post-mortem report states that Nafisa died due to hanging and no other reason," DCP Amitabh Gupta said.

Gupta also denied that there were any injury marks on Nafisa's body, as was being speculated in family and industry circles, which suggested that she might have resorted to some other way to end life before hanging herself.

Crowned Miss India in 1997, 26-year-old Nafisa ended life at her apartment on Juhu-Versowa Link Road last night by hanging herself, police said. The model was reportedly reeling under severe depression due to problems on domestic front, family sources said.

The model's body was handed over to family members this afternoon after an autopsy at Cooper Hospital in North Mumbai, and last rites were performed this evening, sources said.

Police said Nafisa's mother, a close friend and a maid were the persons present in the apartment when the incident occurred. Nafisa is suspected to have had discussion with the trio late in the night before she closeted herself in another room and hung to the ceiling fan.

"We are yet to record statement of those present in the house, particularly, Nafisa's mother and friend since the family was in mourning and busy in last rites," Gupta said.

Meanwhile, shocked by the incident, Usha Joseph, mother of Nafisa, said she (Nafisa) had taken the extreme step due to her dispute with her fiance whom she was supposed to tie the knot in six days.

A visibly upset Usha told reporters, "Her fiance had decided to break off just six days before the marriage because she had grilled about certain issues. All the questions asked were valid."

"Nafisa was otherwise a very strong willed girl," she said.

The fashion and film industry is also shocked by the incident. Reacting to the death of Nafisa, actor Rahul Bose said, "I am shocked. It is a terrible tragedy. She was a wonderful human being. She was intelligent and a honest worker.

However, I had not been in touch with her for quite some time and hence I am not really sure what was going on in her life," Bose said.

According to Alex Kuruvilla MD, MTV Networks, "We at MTV were deeply saddened and shocked to hear the devastating news of Nafisa Joseph's untimely death last night."

All of us will find it difficult to accept that she is no more. She was well loved at MTV and it is especially tragic when one so bright, talented and capable is unable to realise her dreams," Kuruvilla said.

"We will always remember Nafisa as a warm, friendly and cheerful person and pray for her soul to rest in peace," he said.
