Mamata warns LF Govt 'not to play with fire'
Saturday, July 31 2004 19:19 Hrs (IST)

Kolkata: Warning the Left Front (LF) Government not to 'play with fire' by trying to foil the Trinamool Congress' (TC) 12-hour State-wide bandh on August 2, party chief Mamata Banerjee today (July 31, 2004) said that the Government would be held responsible for any untoward incident and urged the LF partners not to support the controversial Conciliation bill.

''CPM (Communist Party of India-Marxist) is misleading LF partners on the West Bengal Block level Conciliation Board Bill, 2004. They should not support it. If the Bill is passed, their supporters would also not be spared. We have called the bandh in the interests of the people,'' Banerjee told newsmen in Kolkata.

Banerjee said that she had resigned from Parliament protesting against TADA (Terrorist and Disruptive Activities Prevention Act) and also opposed the POTA (Prevention of Terrorism Act) in its original form.

Warning the Marxists 'not to play with fire', the Trinamool supremo threatened to launch a fresh movement if the ruling party tried to foil it by force. ''The more they try to suppress our movement, the more we will react. This is our battle for survival. No movement can be suppressed by force.''

Stating that her party had demanded that the 'Black Bill' which was more dangerous than ESMA, MISA and the Emergency, be withdrawn, Banerjee said TC had no other alternative and was forced to call the bandh.

She also appealed to the people not to come out on the streets during the bandh period.
