BJP leaders deliberate on strengthening the party Sunday, August 1 2004 12:23 Hrs (IST)
Dona Paula (Goa):
With the threat to the stability of the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party)-led Government in Goa and heightened security perception looming large over their heads, BJP leaders began deliberations on ways to strengthen the organisation in the wake of the Lok Sabha poll debacle on the second day of their brainstorming session in Goa today (Aug 1, 2004).
Following an intelligence input about a possible Fidayeen attack, an additional company of CRPF (Central Reserve Police Force), comprising roughly 1000 personnel, which arrived from Pune early today, was deployed at all vantage points in and outside Goa International Centre located on the Dona Paula plateau overlooking the Arabian Sea, the venue of BJP's 'Chintan Baithak'.
Besides a heavy posse of personnel from the State police, Coast Guard aircraft maintained surveillance over the area.
A state of high alert has also been sounded across the State.
BJP leaders, including former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and L K Advani, commenced the second day of the Baithak discussing ways and means to strengthen the party in the wake of the Lok Sabha poll debacle and keeping in view coming Assembly elections in five States.
Social, political and geographical expansion of the party and drawing up of a poll strategy for the five States going to polls are also listed for discussion.
