US has 'dramatically' refashioned ties with Pak Wednesday, August 4 2004 17:29 Hrs (IST)
Islamabad:
The United States has "dramatically re-fashioned" its ties with Pakistan in the wake of the 9/11 attacks and the two countries are working closely to win the fight against terror, according to a US Government fact sheet.
"Today US and Pakistan are working closely to win the fight against terror and Pakistani forces are rounding up terrorists along their nation's Western border with Afghanistan," the fact sheet, released in Islamabad by US embassy, said.
President George W Bush had personally written to his Pakistani counterpart Pervez Musharraf in February 2001, emphasising that Osama bin Laden and al-Qaeda were "direct threat to the United States and its interests that must be addressed," the fact sheet released in response to the 9/11 Commission report said.
Bush had again personally asked Musharraf in August 2001 for Pakistan's active engagement against al-Qaeda, it said, adding the US "dramatically re-fashioned its relationship with Pakistan in the wake of the 9/11 attacks."
"President Musharraf is a friend of our country and has taken out of commission over 500 al-Qaeda and Taliban operatives, including Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, the operational planner behind the 9/11 attacks.
Finally, we have proposed five-year three billion-aid packages to support Pakistan's security, economic and social programmes," the fact sheet said.
