New Delhi:
Finding no tangible result of its decade long monitoring to infuse life into dying Yamuna river, the Supreme Court today (August 4,2004) set up a 10-member empowered committee to draw up an action plan within six weeks to suggest measures to cleanse the awfully polluted river.
A visibly disappointed Bench comprising Justice Y K Sabharwal and Justice D M Dharmadhikari passed this order realizing that despite decade long Court monitoring of the task to clean Yamuna, the life line of Delhi, the river water continued to be as polluted.
It all started in the year 1994 when the apex court took suo motu notice of a news report 'And Quiet Flows The Maily Yamuna' in newspaper 'Hindustan Times' and passed several orders over the years in a bid to save the dying river.
The Government on various steps to clean the river has spent a total of over Rs 400 crore.
