SC blasts Gujarat Government on Best Bakery case Monday, August 9 2004 17:03 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
The Supreme Court today (Aug 9, 2004) took exception to the delay in appointment of a Public Prosecutor in the Best Bakery case trial and also asked the Gujarat Government to state within a week the steps taken by it to apprehend the accused in the case.
A Bench headed by Justice Arijit Pasayat took exception to the fact that the Gujarat Government appointed Public Prosecutor had opposed issuance of non-bailable arrest warrants against the accused in the case, which was shifted from Gujarat to Mumbai on the direction of the apex Court.
"You are showing true colours right from the Day 1," the Bench observed and said, "What sort of Public Prosecutor is he who opposes arrest warrants against accused who do not appear before the Court?"
Asking the Director General of Gujarat Police to file within a week steps taken to produce the accused before the trial court, the apex Court asked the State Government to consider the suggestions by the victims regarding appointment of Public Prosecutor in the case.
