BJP playing politics over WTO: Kamal Nath Monday, August 9 2004 22:20 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
Accusing BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) of "playing politics", Government today (Aug 9) said the WTO framework agreement fully protected India's interests, especially with regard to the livelihood concerns of small farmers.
BJP leader and former Commerce Minister Arun Jaitley "should read the full text of the framework agreement before making a press statement," Commerce Minister Kamal Nath told reporters.
"I do not want to make a comparison between what the previous Government did and what the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) Government has done for the good of the country in the WTO negotiations," he said, adding there could be no political reaction as no agreement was reached by the BJP-led NDA (National Democratic Alliance) Government at Cancun Ministerial.
"There is no position when there is no agreement," he said, adding the UPA Government has succeeded in bringing about framework agreement, which would be beneficial for the country.
To the BJP charge that India had succumbed to the pressures of the developed countries by agreeing to negotiate on trade facilitation, one of the four Singapore issues, Kamal Nath said trade facilitation was "in fact good for the country" as it would help in making India's exports more competitive.
Also, India's concerns have been fully met as the agreement clearly provides that developing countries would not have to invest in infrastructure beyond their means.
