Srinagar:
Ahead of the Independence day, police and the BSF (Border Security Force) seized a huge cache of arms and explosives dumped by militants in a field near the Bakshi stadium in Srinagar, where official celebrations will be held, official sources said today (Aug 13, 2004).
Three rockets, six boosters, a high explosive 60-mm mortar bomb, four kgs of explosives, a grenade thrower, eight rifle grenades and two hand grenades were recovered by a joint search party of police and the BSF from Aramwari field in posh Rajbagh locality in the city last night (Aug 12, 2004), the sources said.
In addition, they said, the search party also recovered two AK magazines, 60 rounds, 44 rounds of general purpose machine gun and a wireless set from the field.
Describing the seizure as a major breakthrough, the sources said the explosive might have been dumped in the area by militants to carryout an attack on Independence Day to disrupt the official function in nearby Bakshi stadium.
The recovery was made on a specific information and comes close on the heels of intensified vigil being maintained by the police and paramilitary forces across Kashmir valley, particularly in the areas close to Bakshi stadium in the city.
However, the sources said no one was arrested during the operation.
