Weightlifter Karnam Malleshwari crashes out
Wednesday, August 18 2004 20:22 Hrs (IST)

Athens: Sydney Games bronze medallist Karnam Malleswari did not complete a single lift in the snatch section of the 63kg women's weightlifting event and went out of medal contention in the Olympics in Athens today (Aug 18, 2004).

Her compatriot Pratima Kumari was not even in the starting list of the same category after being billed by the Indian authorities to take part in the event. Malleswari, who opted for the first lift of 100 kg, could not lift the bar even upto her knees. After the failed attempt she went straight to the medical room without even acknowledging her coaches Pal Singh Sandhu and Leonid Taranenko.

The 29-year-old, who returned to serious competition after a two-year break, did not come out for her next two lifts.
