No credible steps by Pak to dismantle terror: Govt Wednesday, September 29 2004 18:40 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
The Pakistani regime has not taken any credible steps so far to dismantle the terrorist infrastructure in the country even though recent reports have indicated efforts to revive some training camps and launching pads there, Lok Sabha was informed today (Aug 18, 2004).
Cross-border infiltration from Pakistan has also increased during June and July, Minister of State for External Affairs E Ahamed said during question hour.
Maintaining there was "some decline" in infiltration levels till May this year after the November 23, 2003 ceasefire, he said the levels increased in June and July and Pakistan had "so far not taken any credible steps to dismantle the infrastructure of support to terrorism".
"Recent reports suggested efforts in the context of reviving some training camps and launching pads" in Pakistan, Ahamed said, adding the US Government has from time to time spoken about the need to end infiltration and dismantle terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan.
"However, infiltration across the border and the Line of Control (LoC) has not stopped and no significant steps have been taken to dismantle the infrastructure," he said.
Asked whether Washington has lifted sanctions against Pakistan imposed after the 1998 nuclear tests, Ahamed replied in affirmative.
However, though the sanctions imposed after the military takeover in 1999 continue, they have been waived annually by the US President since the 9/11 terrorist attacks, he said, adding Washington has announced a package of assistance spread over five years beginning 2005 fiscal.
