Bollywood Masala to spice up Sydney audience Wednesday, August 18 2004 15:24 Hrs (IST)
Sydney:
Come September and residents of Sydney will be treated to a festival of Bollywood films and features representing the "new voice" of Indian filmmaking.
Three of India's "generation next" directors, Nikhil Advani (Kal Ho Na Ho), Rohan Sippy (Kuch Na Kaho) and Raju Hirani (Munna Bhai MBBS) will touch down in Sydney to launch the second Indian Film Festival: 'Bollywood Masala' beginning on September 9 with the screening of blockbuster Main Hoon Na at Cinema Paris.
Advani, whose romantic comedy set in New York, Kal Ho Naa Ho, was the recipient of 14 Indian Film Awards (IIFA) in May 2004, will participate in a forum following a screening of the film during the festival. Kal Ho Naa Ho was the highest grossing film at the box office in Australia.
Son of moviemaker Ramesh Sippy, who's record-breaking, hit Sholay (1975) screened in Indian cinemas for five consecutive years, Rohan will introduce screening of Kuch Naa Kaho and participate in an audience forum following the screening on September 11.
"These three directors are the most promising directors of the next generation and represent the new, changing face of Indian cinema. They have all proved themselves with their first film - their story telling is fresh and new, and their filmmaking skills have matched any seasoned directors," Festival Director Mitu Bhowmick-Lange told sources.
"All three films have been huge commercial successes, both in Indian multiplexes, in rural Indian regions and in international markets," she said.
