Firebrand separatist Geelani put under house arrest

Srinagar: Firebrand separatist leader and chairman of breakaway Hurriyat Conference Syed Ali Shah Geelani was today (Aug 20, 2004) was placed under house arrest, official sources said in Srinagar.

Geelani was placed under confinement at his Hyderpora residence after a police party reached there in the wee hours, they said.

A spokesman of Geelani, meanwhile alleged that the Government was putting curbs on his movement.

The separatist leader was scheduled to attend the funeral prayers of militant commander Manzoorul Islam, who was killed in an encounter with security forces on Wednesday night (Aug 11, 2004), he said.
