I didn't commit any crime, I will not resign: Uma
Friday, August 20 2004 10:57 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Uma Bharti ruled out her resignation in wake of a court case in Karnataka saying she had not committed any crime by hoisting the national tri-colour at Hubli's Idgah Maidan.

"I committed no crime by hoisting the national flag... there is no question of my resignation," she told reporters in New Delhi.

Bharti claimed the cases made out against her including a case of attempt to murder under section 307 were "politically motivated" as she had not made any inflammatory speech and was arrested "immediately after hoisting the national flag".

Bharti said she will consult her lawyers and party leaders, including former Union Law Minister Arun Jaitley before deciding on her next move.

"The Congress is making hoisting of the national flag and taking the name of Lord Ram a punishable offence. I consider it as a pride," Bharti said.

Bharti said she would not compromise on the issue of hoisting the national flag and taking name of Ram. "It is a matter of pride for me. Mahatma Gandhi fought for independence under the tri-colour and today hoisting of the same is being made an offence." "I want to ask Congress if this is the change that has taken place from Mahatma Gandhi to Sonia Gandhi (era). This only shows the degradation taking place in Congress."

"I came to know of cases registered against me (in the Hubli Idgah ground incident) in 2001 when the Karnataka Government started withdrawing them. Now the Congress Government in the State is reversing the withdrawal procedure," she said.
