One more miracle needed for Mother's 'canonisation' Thursday, August 26 2004 16:23 Hrs (IST)
Kolkata:
The 94th birthday of Mother Teresa today (Aug 26, 2004) brought new heights of joy to her admirers the world over with the Missionaries of Charity formerly declaring that search was on for a fresh miracle to put her to sainthood.
''Only one more miracle is necessary. The Postulator's Office in Rome has received some testimonies of favours. They are going through the testimonies and will have to select the best,'' M C superior-general Sister Nirmala told newsmen at the organisation's global headquarter 'Mother House' in Kolkata.
In October 2003, the Vatican had beatified Mother Teresa on the basis of claims by a tribal woman from North Bengal that she was cured of abdominal tumour at the Albanian nun's intercession. A fresh miracle after the beatification is necessary for the sainthood, a process formally known as 'canonisation'.
To a question, Sr Nirmala said the M C had received some claims of fresh miracles, but not yet forwarded them to the Vatican for consideration. ''We will do so soon,'' she said.
After her beatification, Mother came to be known as 'Blessed Mother Teresa of Calcutta' and allowed her limited veneration in M C churches the world over.
Meanwhile, the All-India Minority Forum appealed to Pope John Paul-II to use his office in waiving the mandatory requirement for another miracle to grant sainthood to Mother.
''If the Pope wants, he can waive this requirement. Since he was friend and mentor of Mother, we appeal to him that he declare her a saint without going into the long-drawn process of finding and approving another miracle. All admirers of Mother the world over want this,'' Forum chairman Idris Ali said after a prayer meet at 'Mother House'.
