Pak pumps 50 cr annually for funding JK terrorists Sunday, August 29 2004 17:51 Hrs (IST)
Jammu:
Pakistan continues to pump huge money into Jammu and Kashmir for funding terrorist and secessionist organisations to sustain militancy, the State Government said.
According to rough estimates, terrorist and secessionist organisations receive Rs 50 crore annually, a State Government release said in Jammu.
This is in addition to the amount collected by these organisations through donations, extortions, narco-trade and timber smuggling.
The enormity of flow of funds to terrorists can be judged from the fact that since 1999, the Jammu and Kashmir police and security forces have seized Indian currency worth about Rs two crore, Pak currency more than Rs three lakh and USD $1,00,000 from the hideouts and possession of killed terrorists, the release said.
The recent instances of recovery of huge cache of cash from slain terrorists include recovery of over Rs 97 lakh from Saif-ul-Islam, chief commander of Hizbul Mujahidin on April 2, 2003 at Natipora, Srinagar.
The police have also registered many cases in the State and Delhi on account of instances of money laundering which have surfaced in Jammu and Kashmir and also in the national capital in the past, it said.
According to information from police and security forces, Pakistan has released funds allegedly for separatist groups owning allegiance to Syed Ali Shah Geelani.
These funds were suspended for sometime following differences between factions of Hurriyat, the release said.
