Be alert about moves to weaken secularism: Sonia Sunday, August 29 2004 18:11 Hrs (IST)
Kollam (Kerala):
Congress President Sonia Gandhi today (Aug 29, 2004) wanted social organisations committed to communal harmony and amity to be cautious about moves by the forces seeking to subvert the country's secular tradition fostered by social reformers like Sree Narayana Guru.
"Our time-tested tradition is based on tolerance and diversity. But there are forces of intolerance trying to inflame religious passion. These forces seek to subvert lofty ideals of tolerance and amity," Gandhi said inaugurating the 'Guruvarsham 150', marking the launch of 150the birth centenary celebrations of saint-reformer Sree Narayana Guru.
She wanted organisations like Sree Narayana Dharma Paripalana Yogam (SNDP) to play a more pro-active role in safeguarding secular ideals.
Communalism of any kind was to be combated. The main responsibility was vested with the Government. But organisations like SNDP Yogam was to be more pro-active in safeguarding these lofty ideals, she said.
