Mahatma's grandson preaches peace to Palestinians Monday, August 30 2004 15:40 Hrs (IST)
Jerusalem:
Mahatma Gandhi's grandson Arun Gandhi today (Aug 30, 2004) called upon Palestinian legislators to learn from the non-violent Indian freedom struggle and asked them to take out a protest march on the lines of the historic Salt Satyagraha.
"My grandfather trained his followers to keep their hands down even when faced with disproportionate use of force and, you the leaders of the community, will have to impart similar training among your masses," he said addressing a session of the Palestinian legislature in Jerusalem.
Arun Gandhi, who heads the M K Gandhi Institute of Non-violence at Christian Brothers University in Memphis, US, said people needed to be trained in non-violent methods of protest.
Giving example of the famous 'Salt March' taken out by the Mahatma from Sabarmati Ashram to Dandi in 1930 against a British tax, Arun Gandhi said if non-violent methods had been adopted, Palestinians would have come closer to their goals.
He suggested Palestinian leaders to organise a protest march from Jordan to Jerusalem to grab global attention.
"What would happen? May be the Israeli Army would shoot and kill 100 or 200 people including men, women and children. That would shock the world. The whole world would get up and say what is going on," he said.
