I am ready to make way for Uma back as CM: Gaur Tuesday, August 31 2004 15:34 Hrs (IST)
Bhopal:
A day after Karnataka Government announced its intentions to withdraw cases against BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) leader Uma Bharti, political activity heated up in Madhya Pradesh today (Aug 31, 2004) as Chief Minister Babulal Gaur, expressed readiness to make way for his predecessor.
"I am ready to step down if asked by the central BJP leadership as I took over the office on its directive and support by party MLAs," Gaur told reporters in an informal discussion in Bhopal.
Speculations were rife in the political circles in Bhopal that Bharti might be reinstalled as the Chief Minister if the charges against her were dropped.
Bharti's supporters were jubilant, while Congress leaders claimed the fiery sanyasin was 'aiming to topple' BJP President Venkaiah Naidu, if denied a comeback in Madhya Pradesh.
"BJP high command has to take the decision and individual interests are of no relevance in the party", he said adding the matter would settle once the details of Karnataka Government's move were made clear.
Welcoming the decision of withdrawal of the case "due to people's pressure", BJP State President Kailash Joshi said, "I always felt that Bharti should not have resigned from the post of Chief Minister. Now the party higher-ups will have to take a decision whether Bharti would be reinstated."
Echoing similar sentiments on Karnataka Government's decision, party State Organising Secretary, Kaptan Singh Solanki said, "We have won a battle of ideology to save the honour of the national flag and the Congress finally accepted the truth after agitation spread across the entire country".
