DMK, PMK protest K'taka stand on Cauvery tribunal Wednesday, September 1 2004 21:07 Hrs (IST)
Chennai:
DMK (Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam) President M Karunanidhi today (Sep 1, 2004) asked the Centre to intervene immediately and stop Karnataka's "moves to seek dissolution of the Cauvery water disputes tribunal."
"The tribunal, appointed after a lot of efforts, is to give its final report soon. At such a time, news has reached that efforts are being made in Karnataka to seek dissolution of the tribunal, which is nothing but shocking," he said in a statement in Chennai tonight.
The Centre should immediately intervene and thwart such moves and should continue to ensure that both Karnataka and Tamil Nadu benefited by the tribunal's findings, he said.
"We cannot accept the proposed moves of Karnataka," Karunanidhi said.
PMK (Pattali Makkal Katchi) founder-leader Dr S Ramadoss said the proposed move was "not only unlawful but amounted to showing disrespect to the judiciary."
The Tamil Nadu Government should "legally and politically thwart" Karnataka's moves by filing a petition in the Supreme Court. "All the parties in the Democratic Progressive Alliance in Tamil Nadu should take this matter immediately to the notice of Central Government. If necessary, they should meet Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and also Sonia Gandhi" to plead Tamil Nadu's case, he said in a separate statement.
