BJP to slap civil, criminal suit against Congress
Friday, September 3 2004 16:50 Hrs (IST)

Bangalore: BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) has decided to slap a "civil and criminal" defamation suit against Karnataka Pradesh Congress Committee president B Janardhana Poojary for what it called KPCC's "false and motivated" newspaper advertisement regarding the Uma Bharti episode.

"Today, we are going to issue notices to the KPCC President both civil and criminal," President of BJP's Karnataka unit, H N Ananth Kumar told reporters in Bangalore.

"KPCC has run newspaper advertisements under the caption the truth behind the allegations of heinous offences by Uma Bharti", in an apparent move to counter BJP's campaign demanding withdrawal of "false cases" against her.

"We are going to challenge every sentence of the ad", Kumar said, terming it as "falsehood" and as one, which has made "distortion of facts as the basis."

"We have decided to file a defamation against the KPCC President for coming out with false, motivated and defamatory ad regarding Uma Bharti as well as BJP's role in the hoisting of national flag at Chennamma Maidan," he said.

Kumar said, "The KPCC ad has not brought to public notice what the District Court in Hubli and High Court has said, they have clearly given the verdicts that the Maidan is a public property belonging to the municipal corporation and ordered demolition of shopping complex of Anjuman-e-Islam."

"It (the Maidan) is not a lease for any number of years. It's license to pray for twice in a year," he said.
