Monday, September 6 2004 15:34 Hrs (IST)

Dharwad: Former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Uma Bharti was released from jail this afternoon following a Hubli court order discharging her in a 10-year old criminal case.

Bharti was released after completing all the formalities, official sources said.

She was in the guesthouse of the agricultural university at Dharwad, which had been converted into a prison on security consideration, after she was remanded to a 14-day judicial custody, which ends tomorrow (Sep 7, 2004).

BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) meanwhile called off its five-day old agitation after the court discharged her. BJP also ruled out her immediate reinstatement as Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister.

"There is no such immediate proposal (to reinstate her as Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister), BJP president M Venkaiah Naidu told reporters, welcoming the court's order.
