Venkaiah rules out Uma taking up his BJP party post Tuesday, September 7 2004 15:40 Hrs (IST)
Bangalore:
Ruling out the possibility of former Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Uma Bharti taking up his post, BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) president M Venkaiah Naidu today (Sep 7, 2004) said she would take up a "greater cause" and the party would decide on how to utilise her services.
"She is not unemployed. She is not for any job. She has made a great sacrifice," Naidu shot back, when asked at a press conference whether he would make way for Bharti, who is projected as a strong votary of Hindutva.
Asserting that "we are a mission", not an "ordinary party", Naidu said the BJP functioned collectively and "everybody's services are utilised". "A section of the media makes and unmakes the president and one newspaper even changed the BJP president 21 times in the last two and a half years."
"Party presidents are not made or unmade according to the wishes or desire of individuals. It is a collective decision," he said.
Naidu said Bharti was projected as the Chief Ministerial candidate in Madhya Pradesh polls, she won the "massive" mandate and later volunteered to resign as Chief Minister and the party leadership accepted it in the "larger political perspective" to take on the Congress challenge.
"She will take up a greater cause across the country. How to utilise her services, the party will decide," Naidu said about the next role for Bharti, who was discharged by a Hubli court yesterday in a 10-year-old criminal case.
