BJP to start nationwide campaign on population issue
Wednesday, September 8 2004 15:59 Hrs (IST)

Bangalore: BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) would launch a nationwide campaign "as soon as possible" on the issue of high population growth, which it said, was a matter of serious concern.

Emerging from the party's office-bearers meeting in Bangalore, BJP spokesman Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi told reporters that the population issue was discussed seriously at the meet.

Another party leader Sushma Swaraj said high growth rate of population was a "national problem" and it should not be looked at as a "Hindu-Muslim issue." It was not correct to look at every issue from a "communal perspective," she said.

Swaraj said law should be applicable uniformly to all, so that there was no demographic imbalance.

"It is not so much an issue as to which community is growing more than the other."
