As Russia observed the second day of national mourning yesterday (Sep 7, 2004) in memory of over 330 hostages killed in Beslan school carnage, over one lakh people gathered in Moscow at a rally to say "no" to terror.
In the biggest ever rally since the break up of the Soviet Union, people from all walks of life converged at the mammoth rally near the Kremlin wall on St Basil's Slope saying "Russia is united against terror," "Russia cannot be put on its knees", "We are not afraid of terrorists".
The authorities had mobilised a massive police and security force and the people had to go through security gates for the rally.
No untoward incident was reported.
In the resolution passed by the rally, anti-terror protestors expressed their support for President Vladimir Putin and his anti-terror efforts.
Speaking to reporters at the rally, wife of Nobel laureate Alexander Solzhinitsyn, Natalya Solzhenitsyn said, "We should promote unity in diversity, only then we can become a great nation."
A group of Chechens, with the flag of Chechen republic was also seen among the protestors.
The rally was supported by the mayor of Moscow and official social organisations.
