Urgent need to democratise functioning of UN: Kalam Saturday, September 11 2004 22:07 Hrs (IST)
Dar es Salaam:
Shortly after landing in Dar es Salaam to broaden traditional ties with Africa, President A P J Abdul Kalam has said there is an urgent need for both India and Tanzania to work for the democratisation in the functioning of the United Nations.
"Both our nations have to face the challenges of the new millennium jointly through the strengthening of institutions.
"Tanzania has been a steady co-partner with India on this journey. There is an urgent need to democratise the functioning of the UN and the Security Council through its expansion to reflect the new global realities," Kalam said at a banquet hosted in his honour by Tanzanian President Benjamin William Mkapa.
One of the biggest challenges of the new millennium was the rise of terrorism across the world being experienced by every nation, Kalam, who arrived in Dar es Salaam this evening (Sep 11, 2004) on the first leg of his two-nation visit that will also take him to South Africa, said adding that New Delhi was determined to fight it.
