Manmohan to meet Musharraf on Sept 22 in New York Sunday, September 12 2004 12:08 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
In his first major forays in diplomacy, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will meet Pakistan President Pervez Musharraf in New York "most likely" on September 22 when decisions to further bolster bilateral ties are expected.
As he sets out next week for the UN General Assembly (UNGA) session, Singh will also have his first meetings with international leaders -- Presidents George W Bush of US and Vladimir Putin of Russia and British Prime Minister Tony Blair.
While Singh's programme is still being fine-tuned, official sources said "the Prime Minister's meeting with President Musharraf is most likely to take place on September
22".
The first bilateral meeting between them, slated to be held on the margins of the UNGA session, will give them an opportunity to get to know each other better.
There will be a broad review of progress on eight subjects of the Composite Dialogue process and there could be decisions on enhancing people-to-people contacts, humanitarian issues and in other areas, the sources said.
The Singh-Musharraf parleys will take place within two weeks of the meeting of their Foreign Ministers K Natwar Singh and Khurshid Mehmood Kasuri in New Delhi during which the two sides agreed on 13 proposals relating to confidence building, promotion of friendly exchanges and enhancing of bilateral trade and economic cooperation.
The two Foreign Ministers are likely to meet again in New York ahead of the Singh-Musharraf meeting.
