No country shall have veto power: Kalam's personal view Monday, September 13 2004 14:15 Hrs (IST)
Dar es Salaam:
Advocating a strong foundation for the UN, President A P J Abdul Kalam has said no country should have veto power and suggested a new world order system to combat global terrorism.
"No nation should have veto powers. We need a foundation for the UN. It should not be depending on one country's resources," the President said while addressing prominent personalities in Dar es Salaam last night (Sep 12, 2004). Kalam clarified that these were his "personal views" and not that of the Indian Government.
"It is not my Government view and it is my personal view," he said.
The President was responding to a question on how to tackle terrorism globally when the UN has "not been effective".
Kalam's remarks come days before world leaders gather in New York for the UN General Assembly session. Prime Minister Manmohan Singh will lead the Indian delegation and is expected to make out a strong case for a permanent seat for India in an enlarged UN Security Council.
Observing that India faced a "unique" problem of cross border terrorism, he said that New Delhi was taking steps to reinforce its borders and engaged in talks with its neighbour.
"You need a new world order system to effectively deal with international terrorism, " he said.
