ISI suspect in custody attempts suicide for thrice Thursday, September 16 2004 14:26 Hrs (IST)
Siliguri:
Suspected ISI (Inter-State Intelligence) agent Mohammad Dilshad, who had been in custody since January four, 2002 on the charge of spying for the Pakistan intelligence wing, attempted suicide in Siliguri Correctional Home, his third suicide bid in this year, official sources said.
Dilsahd tried to slash his throat and stomach inside the cell yesterday (Sep 15, 2004) with the sharp edge of an aluminium dish on which food had been served.
Though his injury was not serious, he was sent to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital, Sub-Divisional Officer, Siliguri, Gopal Lama said.
Hospital Superintendent Dr Jyotibikash Saha today (Sep 16, 2004) confirmed he was now out of danger.
Dilshad had tried to kill himself by consuming a bottle of Phenyle in Darjeeling Correctional Home on June 12 last, Lama said. He also tried to cause injury by banging his head inside the prison van on way to Correctional Home after attending the court a month back, the official said.
He had been taken to the North Bengal Medical College and Hospital just 10 days back after falling ill following refusal of jail food and discharged only last week.
Siliguri Correctional Home authorities requested the higher-ups to shift Dilshad elsewhere after other inmates lodged an official complaint that he was misbehaving with others, Home authorities said. The inmates found his behaviour irritating and asked the authorities to look into the matter.
Dilshad was first remanded to police custody after his arrest from the outskirts in Siliguri town in North Bengal in 2002 and was now in judicial custody.
