Turban ban: Sikh students back to schools in France Friday, September 17 2004 16:58 Hrs (IST)
New Delhi:
All Sikh students in France except three have returned to their schools after the Government addressed their reservations on the ban on wearing of turbans in educational institutions.
"Specific solutions were discussed and agreed upon with a few students in accordance with the law as well as children's own requests. Solutions were found for almost all the Sikh children," French Ambassador Dominque Girard said in a letter to Chairman of the National Commission of Minorities Tarlochan Singh.
He said the vast majority of Sikh students had returned to their institutes at the beginning of the academic year without any difficulty.
At present, only three cases were pending and the authorities were engaged in dialogue with them, Girard said.
"Whatever form the outcome of this dialogue may take, you can be assured that those (Sikh) students will be offered solutions to continue their studies within the French education system, which offers a lot of different options.
"Under no circumstances will Sikh students be prevented by the French authorities to carry on their education," he said in the letter.
Singh had taken up the misgivings of the Sikh community in India regarding the ban with top French officials including Foreign Minister Dominique De Villepin who was here recently.
Girard said there was a lot of misinformation in India about the ban, which was only meant to ensure that French schools imparted knowledge without consideration of race, religion or nationality.
