Muslim reservation: HC order evokes mixed response Wednesday, September 22 2004 14:22 Hrs (IST)
Hyderabad:
Andhra Pradesh High Court's verdict of setting aside the Government Order (GO) providing reservation to Muslims evoked mixed response from political parties with BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) welcoming the judgement and other parties blaming State for taking the decision in haste.
Putting up a brave face, the State Government found solace in the Court direction of reconstituting the Backward Classes (BC) Commission to identify eligible sections among Muslims.
"The verdict clearly supports our view point of providing reservations to Muslims," Chief Minister Y S Rajasekhar Reddy said and assured that BC Commission will be set up and social justice will be meted out to Muslim minorities.
Majlis MP Asaduddin Owaisi, who was an impleaded petitioner favouring the GO, said his party will aggressively campaign in favour of reservations and take up the issue at all forums to bring social justice to minorities.
BJP State president, N Indrasena Reddy, welcoming the judgement, said Muslims as a community cannot be given BC status and Congress was back to its appeasement policies.
BJP's ally TDP (Telugu Desam Party) however spoke in favour of reservations but blamed the State Government for not undertaking appropriate exercise before issuing the GO.
"Vital aspects like whether or not the GO will stand legal scrutiny was not looked into and the decision was taken in a haste with political motives," TDP supremo N Chandrababu Naidu said and expressed hope that corrective measures will be taken in wake of the strictures passed by the Court.
CPM (Communist Party of India-Marxist) MLA Md. Gafoor said reservations to Muslims should be implemented and the State has to translate into action all the directives and suggestions of the High Court.
