Uma concludes yatra amid praises on BJP leaders Saturday, September 25 2004 16:20 Hrs (IST)
Amritsar:
After a journey of over 3,000 km across eight States, BJP (Bharatiya Janata Dal) leader Uma Bharti today (Sep 25, 2004) concluded her 'Tiranga Yatra' at the historic Jalianwala Bagh in Amritsar.
Bharati handed over the flag that she carried for 15 days from Hubli in Karnataka to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee today at a public rally near Jalianwala Bagh.
Several prominent BJP leaders including Arun Jaitely, Anant Kumar, Shanawaz Hussein, Navjot Singh Sidhu and Shironmani Akali Dal president Prakash Singh Badal were present on the occasion.
Addressing the gathering of over 1,000 people, Bharti thaked the BJP top leadership for the support extended by it during the yatra.
"I am just an ex Chief Minister but Vajpayeeji, former deputy Prime Minister L K Advani and BJP president M Venkiah Naidu all gave unstinted support to me during the yatra."
There were some protests today as Bharti's yatra moves from Ludhiana to Amritsar with some activists of Shiromani Akali Dal (Mann) group allegedly showing black flags to her.
Two women even came to the venue where the public rally was held and shouted "Uma Bharti vapas jao( Uma Bharti go back) "and showed black flags.
Bharti said this only demonstrated the insult being shown by Punjab Chief Minister Amarinder singh and SAD (Mann)'s chief Simarjeet Singh Mann to the national flag.
