Numero uno Thumri Queen Shobha Gurtu passes away

Mumbai: Noted vocalist Shobha Gurtu passed away at her residence at Worli in central Mumbai today (Sep 27, 2004) following a cardiac arrest, according to family sources. She was 78.

Gurtu had been admitted to a city hospital two weeks ago for cardiac problem, but was discharged after she felt better.

Known as the thumri queen, Gurtu's career spanned over five decades. A disciple of Kamal Khan, the numero uno singer had command over pure classical but was more well known for light classical music.

She had also created the musical scores for several Marathi and Hindi movies. Gurtu was awarded the Sangeet Sahitya Academy award as well as the Padma Bhusan. She is survived by two sons.

Her funeral will be held later in the day, the sources said.
