I cannot apologise for removing Saddam: Blair Wednesday, September 29 2004 09:34 Hrs (IST)
London:
British Prime Minister Tony Blair said yesterday (Sep 28, 2004) he could not "sincerely" apologize for helping to depose Saddam Hussein, but could apologize for using wrong information about former Iraqi leader's supposed weapons of mass destruction (WMD).
Blair also said he realised that the UK's participation in Iraq war had divided the country and that he entirely understood why many Britons were opposed to the war.
"And the problem is I can apologize for the information that turned out to be wrong, but I can't, sincerely at least, apologise for removing Saddam. The world is a better place with Saddam in prison, not in power," Blair said the Labour Party's annual conference at Brighton, 100 km from London.
