Pappu runs pillar to post to surrender, police refuse Saturday, October 2 2004 15:03 Hrs (IST)
Madhepura:
Former MP and RJD (Rashtriya Janata Dal) candidate for Madhepura by-poll Rajesh Ranjan alias Pappu Yadav today (Oct 2, 2004) ran from pillar to post to surrender following the Supreme Court order cancelling his bail in the CPM (Communist Party Marxist) MLA Ajit Sarkar murder case but neither the police nor the sub-divisional judicial magistrate accepted his surrender.
Accompanied by his hundreds of supporters, Pappu Yadav drove to the Sadar police station where he wanted the police to accept his surrender but the officer-in-charge Rahmat Ali after a brief meeting with the Police Superintendent S Akhtar informed the former MP that they would not take him into custody as there was no case pending with this police station.
Earlier, Yadav along with his lawyer Dhirendra Jha went to the residence of SDJM S N Singh and petitioned the latter to accept his surrender. Singh turned down their request, Jha claimed and added that both the police and the magistrate refused to accept the surrender saying they were yet to receive an order of the Supreme Court.
When contacted, Pappu Yadav said as a law-abiding citizen he made frantic efforts to surrender in Madhepura for forwarding him to the Beur jail in the capital following the apex court order but the police and the SDJM did not accept his request.
Yadav said he would leave Madhepura either today or tomorrow to surrender before the court of the designated CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) judge trying the case in Patna.
