UPA Govt 'very fragile', can fall any time: Advani Thursday, October 7 2004 11:09 Hrs (IST)
Pune:
Former Deputy Prime Minister L K Advani described the Congress-led UPA (United Progressive Alliance) Government at the Centre as "very fragile" and said it could fall any time.
"The Congress-led UPA Government is very fragile and can fall for no or any reason", the senior BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) leader told election meetings for Shiv Sena-BJP candidates for Maharashtra Assembly.
"During the time of H D Deve Gowda and I K Gujral's Governments, people used to wonder how long they would survive. The same question is dogging the general public now too," he said.
Advani, quoting a German bank report, said, "It has given a life span of one-and-half years to the UPA Government. When Assembly elections become due in West Bengal and Kerala, complications would begin to arise within the UPA Government ultimately leading to its downfall," an apparent reference to possible political turf battle between Congress, the lead partner of UPA, and their main prop from outside the Left.
Claiming that in countries ruled by communist parties, the post of secretary general was more important than the head of the Government, the BJP leader said, "one is forced to wonder whether the same system was being followed in the country considering the multiplicity of authorities "undermining" Prime Minister Manmohan Singh's stature as head of the Government".
