New Delhi: Air travel is likely to become costlier from October 14 with all the major domestic airlines planning a hike of 10 per cent in line with the spurt in oil prices and the weakening Rupee.

Officials of the major domestic carriers, Indian Airlines, Air Sahara and Jet Airways, confirmed the move, saying that fares in both business and economy classes as well as the Dollar fares would be hiked.

It is not yet clear whether the fares under the advance purchase scheme (APEX) as well as the fares on the international routes operated by these airlines would be affected.

While Indian Airlines has sought the permission of the Civil Aviation Ministry to raise the fares, Air Sahara and Jet Airways are also understood to have decided to hike the prices by October 14.

Air Sahara may keep its special 'Surprice' scheme unchanged.

Domestic fares are already under pressure due to the high sales tax on aviation turbine fuel imposed by most of the States across the country.
