Biggest ever people's movement opposing FDI and WB
Thursday, October 7 2004 21:40 Hrs (IST)

Kolkata: To oppose the foreign direct investment (FDI) and world bank projects in the country, 160 mass organisations have banded together to launch the 'biggest ever people's movement' and demand India's total withdrawal from the WTO (World Trade Organisation).

''We have formed a 26-member preparatory committee with seven convenors to spearhead the movement against the FDI besides disinvestment of PSUs as well as to oppose the National Agricultural policy among other things,'' G N Saibaba, secretary of All India People's Representatives Forum said after the three-day convention of the organisations, which concluded in Kolkata today (Oct 7, 2004).

Stating that the movement would be launched in December when the meeting of the WTO was scheduled, he said India's total withdrawal from the WTO was wanted.

''We have initiated a process to build a broad based movement and we will launch the biggest ever people's movement in the country,'' he said adding that the organisations had also decided not to participate in any election.

Saibaba also slammed the Left parties, especially the CPM (Communist Party Marxist) saying that the ruling Left Front-led by the Marxists was the 'most reactionary Government'.

''It is implementing World Bank projects in the State, welcoming FDI and following anti-people policies,'' he said.

Asked that the Left parties had also opposed FDI in three key sectors - telecom, insurance and civil aviation, he said that the left was only pretending to oppose FDI. ''They are supporting the UPA (United Progressive Alliance) Government. They have no stand."
