Special operations launched in Lower Assam districts Thursday, October 7 2004 14:08 Hrs (IST)
Guwahati:
Special operations have been launched in Lower Assam districts affected by recent acts of violence by the banned NDFB (National Democratic Front of Bodoland) that claimed 49 lives.
A senior police official said that the newly appointed IGP (Operations), R M Singh, had already rushed to the worst-hit Dhubri district, where 24 people were killed in three days, and was supervising operations to drive out militants.
Intensified Army patrolling was on along the Indo-Bhutan and Indo-Bangla borders and a strict vigil was being maintained to prevent ultras from sneaking into the neighbouring countries.
An alert has also been sounded along the Assam-Meghalaya border and in the districts along the border of both the States after the recovery of huge quantities of RDX and gelatines from Tikrikilla which is considered a safe corridor for both ULFA (United Liberation Front of Assam) and NDFB militants.
The recovery of the explosives indicates that the militants are planning further attacks in the region and as such security measures in the Assam-Meghalaya border areas have been further tightened, the official said.
Sharing of intelligence among the Army and police was being coordinated and all superintendents of police in the State had been directed to take tough measures to deal with insurgency, the official said.
