HC reserves order on plea for Telgi's voice sample Thursday, October 7 2004 15:06 Hrs (IST)
Mumbai:
The Bombay High Court has reserved its order until Oct 12, 2004 on a CBI plea seeking permission to record sample voice of six accused, including Abdul Karim Telgi, the suspected kingpin in the fake stamp paper scam.
Justice A M Khanvilkar, yesterday (Oct 6, 2004), concluded the hearing on CBI's application and reserved the order for next week.
The Special Investigating Team (SIT), which was earlier probing the case before the CBI stepped in, had filed an application for recording the voice sample of Telgi in the special MCOCA (Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act) court of S M Shembole in Pune but it was rejected following which the former chose to go in appeal against the lower court's order in the high court.
By the time the matter was listed for the hearing, the probe in the multi-crore fake stamp paper cases was handed over to CBI and therefore the High Court allowed an amendment to be made for making the CBI the petitioner and replacing SIT of Maharashtra.
While in Bangalore jail, Telgi's conversations with Manoj Mehta, Dilip Kamath, Anil Gote, Azim Telgi and Abdul Rashid Kulkarni, other accused in the fake stamp paper case, were recorded and 14 cassettes of the same in the possession of the investigating agency in Karnataka were given to SIT of Maharashtra so as to help the latter with the investigation it was conducting within the territorial limits of its jurisdiction.
