Landslides lash Eastern India, another 21 dead Friday, October 8 2004 19:57 Hrs (IST)

Heavy rains and landslides continued to batter three States of Eastern region, Assam and Meghalaya besides West Bengal claiming another 21 lives today (Oct 8, 2004) as the toll rose to 36.
Assam was the worst hit of the three where another eleven persons died as the Army with rubber boats was deployed to rescue marooned people as the capital city remained paralysed with downpours for the third consecutive day.
Landslides killed another six and injured two at Dhirenpara in Fatashil Ambari, three in Jorabat on the Guwahati-Shillong Road, two in Jyotinagar area and injured eight others in Red Cross locality in Chandmari, official sources said.
Yesterday (Oct 7, 2004) in Odalbakra area in Guwahati six persons, including two minor girls and a woman, were killed and eleven others injured in landslides.
Kamrup (Metropolitan) Deputy Commissioner A K Absar Hazarika said that the Army had been deployed in Anil Nagar, Nabin Nagar, Tarun Nagar, G S Road and R G Baruah Road.
The situation in Guwahati city was grim with almost all localities under water, including the State secretariat and Assembly in Dispur.
There was no electricity in the Doordarshan Kendra since yesterday as its powerhouse and the complex was inundated. The DD authorities were forced to cancel its programmes, including the news bulletin this morning, officials said.
