Sonia talks; On Shivaji and 'sarva dharma samabhav' Friday, October 8 2004 21:42 Hrs (IST)
Jamkhed, (Ahmednagar):
Calling Chhatrapati Shivaji's style of functioning as a great example of 'sarva dharma samabhav', Congress president Sonia Gandhi today (Oct 8, 2004) said some parties do not (not) obviously like it though they take the Maratha warrior's name.
"Maharashtra is a land of Shivaji. His Army had many Muslims as 'senapatis' (generals), and people from other communities also held other important post, a fact which cannot be obliterated from the annals of history," Gandhi told a public meeting in Jamkhed.
"But some parties do not (not) like it thought they take Chhatrapati Shivaji's name and do not believe in following the ideals set by the great leader," she said.
"Such parties have no faith in unity and therefore keep raising issues that create unrest and divide the society in the name of religion," Gandhi and said BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party)-Shiv Sena are playing a dangerous game by asking people not to vote for Congress.
In the last five years of the DF (Democratic Front) Government, Maharashtra has made all round progress, she said.
She also said that the BJP used crores of rupees for their publicity in the last Parliamentary elections, but the misleading campaign proved to be of no use to them.
"The UPA (United Progressive Alliance) Government is concerned over the future of the youth and unemployment. The Centre is making some schemes keeping them in mind and the rural women," she added.
