Death toll rises to 133 in flood-hit Goalpara in Assam Monday, October 11 2004 14:06 Hrs (IST)

The death toll in flash floods in Goalpara district of Assam today (Oct 11, 2004) rose to 133 with the recovery of 14 more bodies since last night, official sources said.
Altogether 150 people have died in the last six days in the State with 17 persons killed in landslides in Guwahati, besides the deaths in Goalpara.
Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi today visited the worst affected areas to take stock of the situation and was likely to hold discussions with the district administration to ensure speedy recovery of bodies, distribution of relief materials and medical aid to the affected people.
Round the clock rescue operations were on by the police and army and there was possibility of more bodies being recovered as the water was receding.
More than 20,000 people have taken shelter in the 55 relief camps opened so and efforts are on to clear the trail of destruction left by the fury of the floods.
Carcasses of countless cattle heads were found floating in the affected areas and efforts were on to dispose these immediately as it may lead to spread of various diseases.
At least 182 villages spread over three areas of Krishnai, Dudhnoi and Agia have been hit by the flash floods affecting more than 1.85 lakh people.
Gushing waters from the Garo Hills in neighbouring Meghalaya over flooded Krishnai, Rongjuli and Dudhnoi rivers inundating vast areas since Oct 8, 2004.
