Bolt, flies and what not found in soft drink bottles Tuesday, October 12 2004 15:50 Hrs (IST)
Gangtok:
Next time you order a Fanta, Limca or Maaza in Gangtok you had better be careful as their bottles may contain insects and flies, dirt or even something as unexpected as a bolt.
The Sikkim Chamber of Commerce Secretary Rakesh Somani, who had produced a Fanta bottle at a press conference in Gangtok recently containing an insect, exhibited to the press here today (Oct 12, 2004) two sealed bottles, one each of Limca and Maaza containing a bolt, a fly, ants and dirt.
While one could easily sight a bolt in the Limca bottle which was already past its expiry date the Mazaa bottle had several ants, a fly and layers of dirt in it.
Somani said the Fanta bottle displayed at the earlier press conference had been found in his own retail shop but the two bottles in his possession today had been given to him by two different retailers of the town who had requested not to be named.
''I am presenting these bottles before you just as a social obligation. I want people to know through the press how dangerous it could be to go in for a soft drink in Gangtok'', he said.
He said he had already written to the manufacturing company (Coca Cola India) about it but the manufacturers did not seem bothered enough to give a reply.
He said he would submit the bottles to the food division of the State's health department and leave it to the Government to decide what to do in the matter.
