HC allows CBI to take voice samples of Telgi and Gote Tuesday, October 12 2004 17:42 Hrs (IST)
Mumbai:
The Bombay High Court today (Oct 12, 2004) allowed CBI (Central Bureau of Investigation) to obtain voice samples of prime accused in fake stamp paper racket Abdul Karim Telgi and co-accused Anil Gote, former Samajwadi Party MLA.
Justice A M Khanvilkar allowed CBI's plea after the agency said it wanted to compare the voices of the accused with those appearing in 14 audio CDs which had been given to them by the Karnataka Stamp Investigation Team (SIT).
The Karnataka SIT had intercepted telephonic talks between Telgi and other accused, which throw light on their alleged involvement.
The lawyers for the accused argued that taking their voice samples would amount to the accused giving evidence against themselves.
Telgi and Gote are currently lodged at Yeravada jail at Pune for their alleged involvement in the scam.
