Wednesday, October 13 2004 11:28 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: Government has asked Censor Board Chief Anupam Kher to step down but the noted film personality is unlikely to do, as he believed that the directive is politically motivated.

Kher, appointed by the previous NDA (National Democratic Alliance) Government to head the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) which is commonly known as Censor Board, got the direction from the Information and Broadcasting Ministry to step down.

When contacted in Mumbai, Kher declined to comment, but sources close to him said that Bollywood actor would not resign as he considered the Government action a slur on his personality.

I & B Secretary Navin Chawla said no communication was sent to Kher.

On record, Kher said in Mumbai, "I have not received any official communication still... I will be addressing a press conference in the regard in New Delhi tomorrow."

Sources said that Kher would rather want the Government to sack him instead of stepping down as he felt that the directive was tantamount to questioning his credibility.
