EC orders stopping of counting in Mainpuri in UP
Friday, October 15 2004 18:34 Hrs (IST)

New Delhi: The Election Commission today (Oct 15, 2004) ordered stoppage of counting in by-poll for the Mainpuri Lok Sabha constituency in Uttar Pradesh tomorrow (Oct 16, 2004) in the wake of "various complaints of large scale rigging and intimidation," EC sources said.

The by-poll was caused following the resignation of the seat by Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mulayam Singh Yadav.

The sources said that the Commission has also decided to send a four-member team to Mainpuri tomorrow to look into the complaints.

The team would meet political parties and candidates on Sunday, the sources said.

Earlier, Congress spokesman Abhishek Singhvi said that the Commission was approached by the party demanding "immediate strong action" in Mainpuri due to "large scale booth capturing".
