Film crisis: KFCC to seek legal opinion on SC stay Saturday, October 16 2004 15:38 Hrs (IST)
Bangalore:
The Karnataka Film Chamber of Commerce (KFCC) today (Oct 16, 2004) said that it would seek legal opinion on the Supreme Court stay on its seven-week moratorium on release of non-Kannada films.
"We still do not have all the details of the Supreme Court order. However, we will surely take legal opinion and discuss the development at the meeting convened on Oct 18", KFCC President H D Gangaraju told sources in Bangalore.
Going a step further, Kannada Film Producers' association (KPA) president Basant Kumar Patil said the KFA, at its meeting today, would seek legal counsel on how to vacate the stay.
"We will propose to the Government to bring in an ordinance at the October 18 meeting, which will be chaired by Deputy Chief Minister Siddaramaiah", he said.
Expressing similar sentiments of 'finding a legal remedy', Kannada Film Industry Action Committee Head, Ashok, defending the moratorium, said it was done to 'save Kannada language and culture".
The Supreme Court judgement has brought 'welcome relief' to the exhibitors in the State, who were sore about the huge loss incurred as a result of the seven-week moratorium on release of non-Kannada films.
The Apex Court order came yesterday in the midst of a protracted crisis, with the Kannada film industry and theatre owners pitted against each other on the moratorium issue.
Exhibitors have made it repeatedly clear that they are in no mood to adhere to the moratorium, simply because it would mean huge financial losses to them.
